Mike Murray wrote an article and I pulled this information from his work. As you know, he is my fave!! Thank you, Mike!!
Did you know that your brain has a dimmer switch? And there is a big difference in brain power when it is set at dim versus full-on bright? This dimmer switch is the activity of our mitochondria, the energy producing compartment of cells in our body and brain. Mitochondria produce chemical energy in the form of the chemical adenosine triphosphate (ATP) that fuels life. And two critical cofactors to mitochondrial function are coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) and pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ). Here are 7 key things to know about these mitochondrial enhancers:
1. CoQ10 and PQQ act as sparkplugs in the generation of ATP.
2. CoQ10 and PQQ also protect the mitochondria from being damaged in the process of energy production.
3. PQQ also stimulates the spontaneous generation of new mitochondria, a process known as mitochondrial biogenesis.
4. PQQ supplementation was shown to improve cellular energy levels, that means cells function better and people feel more energized.
5. While CoQ10 can be made in the body, levels are generally low due to a variety of reasons such as aging and the use of cholesterol-lowering statin drugs. In contrast, PQQ cannot be made in the body. Dietary intake is often inadequate making supplementation very important.
6. Since PQQ stimulates increased energy production in brain cells, it also makes your brain brighter. In a study published in 2022 in Food & Function, in adults under the age of 40 years, PQQ at a dosage of 20 mg per day improved cognitive flexibility, processing speed, and execution speed after 8 weeks. In adults over 40 years PQQ improved both complex and verbal memory.
7. CoQ10 and PQQQ are effective on their own in boosting brain power, taking them together at a dosage of CoQ10 300 mg and PQQ 20 mg daily produces greater benefit. They are synergistic meaning that 1+1 = 3.
More food for literal thought!! We have so many tools available, what a great challenge it is to decide which to employ. Good hunting as you research this subject even more.
