Loving your brain!

“Health is our first wealth.” (Emerson) While every system, tissue, and cell in the body is valuable, the brain is so well-protected in the body for a reason – it is especially VALUABLE! The brain is housed in our skull and protected by a wall of cells known as the blood-brain-barrier or BBB. It is not only trauma caused by a blow to the head that we want to protect against, but also the trauma caused by nutrient deficiency and toxic chemicals to the brain. The brain is the most metabolically active tissue in the body. It utilizes the most oxygen and is critically dependent on a constant, steady stream of oxygen and nutrients to function properly. And if you really want to love your brain, feed it super nutrition. Mitochondrial function and energy production in the brain is like a dimmer switch. At low levels of mitochondrial function, most people barely have enough energy to make it through the day and are “dimwitted” or suffer from “brain fog.” Low energy production in the brain sets the stage for poor cognitive function, even in children. In older adults it can be debilitating. There is a reason why key areas of the brain contain close to a million mitochondria per cell. It takes a lot of energy for the brain to do its job. Memory loss and decreased brain power is NOT inevitable as we age. Steps can be taken to not only stop memory loss and mental decline, but also reverse it. Science has shown us that intelligence, memory, behavior, mood and concentration are all influenced by the quality of brain nutrition. Young or old, nutritional status plays a vital role in determining how well a brain functions. Numerous studies have shown a number of dietary factors produce higher mental function. Studies at Oxford University with B vitamins, and the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA from fish oils were particularly impressive. Even something as simple as a single serving of berries, dark chocolate, or green leafy vegetables has shown brain boosting effects. And then there are all the various super brain boosting dietary supplements available that really do work. And if you are showing signs of decreased brain power or loss of memory, act NOW and be very aggressive in your diet, lifestyle, and supplement strategy to get your brain back in shape! To provide some direction, here are some key supplements that can make a BIG impact in people who need the highest level of support. Foundation Supplements

  • High potency multiple vitamin and mineral

  • Vitamin D-3: 5,000 IU per day

  • Fish oil at a dosage of 1,000 to 3,000 mg (EPA+DHA) per day

  • Grape seed extract at 300 mg per day (Rotating between quality antioxidants is smart)

Additional Recommendations

  • Berberine at 1000 mg per day (Amazing anti-inflammatory activity as well as glucose metabolism support)

  • PQQ 20mg and CoQ10 200mg per day

  • NAC 600mg twice per day

  • Lion's Mane (Host Defense is my fave, follow the label.)

Please keep in mind that improvements in mental function and memory can take some time. Give it at least 2 to 4 weeks to judge efficacy and, even then, results can be difficult to notice without a very detailed clinical assessment to compare against. Has to be said, but most folks notice improvement even when gradual and slight! Also, quality counts, only buy known brands with a history of reliability.
