In a blog recently, I wrote about a 28-year study of close to 100,000 people, where Harvard researchers found that olive oil is associated with an almost 30% reduction in risk of death from all types of diseases of the brain and nervous system, including Alzheimer’s disease.
The authors of the study pointed out that the healthy fats and phenolic compounds in olive oil target the full range of factors that are believed to trigger Alzheimer’s.
These findings are fantastic news for anyone who wants to avoid brain disease! It is the main reason why olive oil continues to be a staple of my diet, and why I often consume at least a full liter of high quality, extra virgin olive oil each week! I highly recommend using extra virgin olive oil liberally, pouring it on as many foods as you wish. I love it on my scrambled eggs in the morning and with my other meals as well.
The Four Most Important Words When You Buy Olive Oil
Whenever you shop for olive oil, remember: the fresher, the better. For me, that largely means avoiding olive oil sold in supermarkets, where the oil can sit on the shelf for months or even years, growing stale, musty, and rancid. We learned this and many other sobering facts about commercially available olive oil in my interview with Larry Olmsted several years ago. That’s definitely not what you want when it comes to your health or the health of your brain.
One of my favorite sources of olive oil is from a wonderful company called The Fresh-Pressed Olive Oil Club.
They ship—right to your door—some of the best artisanal olive oils direct from award-winning family farms around the world. And they do it right at harvest time when the olive oils are at their peak of flavor, aroma, and nutritional value.
Every olive oil is independently certified by an accredited third-party laboratory to be 100% pure extra virgin. They are some of the freshest, and most flavorful olive oils I’ve ever tasted and they are out-of-this-world delicious!
Check out this amazing source as one option to make sure your oil is FRESH!!
